Article Marketing – How to Use Article Marketing After Google’s Panda Farmer

Up until recently, many article marketers used the “Shotgun Approach.” In the shotgun approach you shoot a shot gun and spray pellets everywhere and hope that something hits the target. In a similar manner, many marketers wrote, or had written for them numerous articles, which they used article spinners to create numerous “spun copies” and submitted them to a wide variety of article directories. These tactics were used because they created numerous back links, but because they were also very effective.

I think it’s safe to say that Google hates SPAM. Google strives to bring it’s customers the most relevant search content available. They often do this by changing their algorithms.

Recently Google introduced it’s newest algorithm, Panda. It was also called the “Farmer Update.”

The following is a quote taken from a post by Amit Singhal in the Official Google Blog, “This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful or “content farms” were hit very hard. Some of the largest, respected article directories were hit the hardest. Other sites fared well and some even went up in ranking.

Below I have a list of sites that lost standing as a result of Panda/Farmer and another list of those whose rankings actually went up.

Partial List of Top Sites that lost standing

  • Almost all article directories and “content farms”;
  • Ezine Articles;
  • Buzzle;
  • Hub Pages;
  • Suite 101;
  • ArticleBase.

Partial List of Top Sites that Gained Standing:

  • Blogspot;
  • Facebook;
  • GoArticles;
  • YouTube;
  • Digg.

Now the point of all of this, is after all the Panda-Monium, what can we learn from this?  Is Article Marketing Dead?  Did the Panda  kill  Article Marketing?  Has Article Marketing gone the way of the DoDo? I believe Article Marketing Is sill alive and kicking, the rules have just changed.  To succeed in internet marketing, you must keep up too date with  current events.

It seems like everyone is focusing on the  negative aspects of this update.  I’m going to focus on the real opportunity this creates for people who provide content that meets the new standards.

Ok, here’s my take on How to Use Article Marketing in our post Panda world.  I believe that in order to Effectively Use Article Marketing Today, you should focus on the following factors:

1.  Unique Content -.  In the same Google Blog post Amit Singal was quoted as saying “It [Google] will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.”  So in order to take advantage of higher rankings make sure that your content is original and not just a duplicate of someone else’s article.  Be unique, use your own voice, mix it up a bit.  I think that there are a number of ways you can do this.

  • a.  Submit an original article to each of the top article directories.  This will definitely get you better rankings, however, it will take a lot of time.
  • b.  Submit original articles to a handful of the top article directories and spin the rest.  Be sure to spin each article to a very unique level of uniqueness of say at least 80% uniqueness.
  • c.  Spin all of your articles to a very high uniqueness level of at least 80%.

I’m sure there are some other options, if you can think of one.  Leave me a comment below.

2.  Quality Content – In the past many marketer’s Article Marketing strategies consisted of submitting “Low Quality Highly Spun Articles” to any and all article directories.  After Panda/Farmer it’s apparent that Google will give higher rankings to “High Quality Articles”, that are researched and well written.   Write articles to help your readers and solve their problems.  Provide them with information that they want to read about and that will benefit them.  I think that the days of just submitting thin articles of little value, just to get back links maybe over.  It appears that after Panda/Farmer that it’s Quality vs. Quantity.

In the past many article directories accepted almost any article irregardless of length or content as long as you used good grammar and punctuation.   In the aftermath of Panda, many directories are changing their acceptance requirements.  As a result make sure that you follow my advice above and also submit articles of at least a 400 word count.  Higher word count articles are seen as having more value.  A good rule of thumb is to make sure that your articles are at least 500-800 words.  You don’t want to make them so long people won’t read them.

3.  Social Media Sites -  Use social media sites to get more bang for your buck.  Take brief summary’s of your article marketing articles and submit them to social media sites, such as:

  • Twitter;
  • Facebook;
  • Digg;
  • Linkedin;
  • StumbleUpon;
  • Technorati, etc.

4.  Repurpose Your Articles - Another way to get more out of your article marketing efforts is too repurpose your articles.  It’s really easy to do.  You’ve already done the research and written the articles, now use the same content to create different types of media.

  • Power Point Presentations -  you can turn your article marketing articles into power point presentations and use them in your email campaigns.
  • PDF Files -  take your articles and create pdf’s that you can use in your emails or use as bonuses in your opt in boxes or offers.
  • Videos – you can go one step farther and turn your power point presentation into a video and submit it to any or all of the video submission sites.  This may be the new trend in free or inexpensive marketing as Google values videos and I don’t know of any algorithm’s affecting videos.  You can submit these repurposed videos to numerous sites with products like Traffic Geyser.

After the Panda/Farmer Update, it’s a New Day in Article Marketing.  Many of the mighty have fallen.  I think that there is a great opportunity for those who are willing to change their strategies and do what it takes to succeed.

No one is certain how to use article marketing after Panda/Farmer and other updates.  However, In times of confusion or uncertainty, those who take targeted action can make great gains.  I think this is a great opportunity to get higher rankings and better SEO.

Article Marketing is still alive and kicking, although the rules of how to most effectively use article marketing have changed.  I suggest you “Carpe Diem” or Seize the Day and better rankings by following the strategies I’ve outlined above.

I am really enjoying the theme/design of your weblog. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility problems? A few of my blog readers have complained about my blog not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Chrome. Do you have any ideas to help fix this issue?

John,

I found your article raised more questions than it answered. This means that it is a good thought provoking article. Great material, definitely relevant for those of us in the blogosphere.

Now, I need to find out what the top directories are and submit my articles to hem.

I didn’t know we could submit article summaries to Technorati. Thanks for the information as my blog is listed on that site.

I always take my time writing articles and make sure each one is unique. Ezine articles doesn’t let you submit duplicate content any more. I know I tried and was rejected.

That what i keep saying, Panda is a bad thing only as long as you take it as a bad thing. But if you manage to adapt and take advantage of the changes you’ll notice it can actually become an advantage.
And that advantage will be huge because everyone else is wasting time feeling sorry for themselves instead of working on it.

You have given some good details about the google panda update. I read this at many places but I like the precise details that you have given. I believe in future there can be some more algorithm changes that will focus on quality. It is a good idea to focus more on quality and write some good articles.

John August 25, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Your right Andy. With all the recent updates you need to provide quality content and value to your readers. Any other topics you’d like to see?

So social sites are doing better than article writing sites. I think that may not be very good for bloggers and article writers. Thank you for the tips on ways to market your article.

What I seem to be missing the most since the Panda took effect was the direct traffic that article directories used to send. With the right plan, you used to be able to get 75 to 100 opt ins per day in some markets. Still have yet to find a method that replaces that stream of traffic.

Your right, there does seem to be less traffic. That’s why it’s really important to provide quality content and information that helps people solve their problems.

I ws under the impression that the Panda update effects were sitewide rather than page specific.

Effectively, even if you were to upload a unique and quality article, because the directories themselves are full of junk, even the best piece of writing is still not going to have the same affects as it would have done before Panda.
